Schools, commercial sites and high rise across the Sunshine Coast
Fire service mains, hydrants, booster assemblies and pump rooms
After a leak was detected near my driveway, Kevin very carefully jack-hammered through and found the leaking pipe. He removed the pipe, replaced it with a new one, cemented over it and very neatly finished the surface. Kevin is an excellent plumber and problem solver — I would recommend him for any plumbing job.
Fire Service Leak Detection
Fire service mains sit on the bigger sites — schools, shopping centres, aged care, industrial estates, high rise. They feed the hydrant ring and the boosters, and they sit under pressure doing nothing at all until the day they are needed.
That is exactly why a leak on one goes unnoticed. There is no tap running, no fixture in use, nothing obvious to point at. It shows up as a pressure drop, a jacking pump cycling more than it should, a wet patch on the lawn that never dries out, or a water bill nobody can explain.
We locate leaks on fire service mains without shutting the site down and without digging up a car park to find out where the pipe runs.

What's involved
Most modern fire service mains are run in poly underground. We trace the line, then pinpoint the leak on it before anything is opened up.
Grooved and Victaulic pipework through pump rooms and risers. Joints, gaskets and couplings are common failure points.
Plenty of older premises still run copper fire services. Age, ground movement and electrolysis all take their toll.
Booster assemblies, jacking pumps and electric jockey pumps. A pump that keeps cycling is usually telling you something.
For small leaks we charge the main with nitrogen from cylinder packs, then track exactly where it surfaces.
Larger mains need volume. We bring in trailer-mounted compressors to hold pressure on the system while we work the line.
Fire services are not domestic plumbing. The pipe is bigger, the pressures are higher, and the volume of air or gas needed to test one properly is well beyond what a small rig will deliver.
For larger mains we bring in a trailer-mounted compressor so we can hold pressure on the system long enough to work the line and find the loss. For smaller leaks, and where we need finer detection, we use cylinder packs of nitrogen at high pressure — it gives us a much cleaner signal to trace than air does.
Everything is done with the site in mind. Fire services are safety infrastructure, so isolation and reinstatement get planned with whoever manages the building, and we work in with your fire maintenance contractor where one is involved.
