Pool Leak Detection

Losing water from the pool? We find the leak — without emptying it

C Caroline Lowe Google review · Verified ★★★★★

After a leak was detected near my driveway, Kevin very carefully jack-hammered through and found the leaking pipe. He removed the pipe, replaced it with a new one, cemented over it and very neatly finished the surface. Kevin is an excellent plumber and problem solver — I would recommend him for any plumbing job.

Pool Leak Detection

Where pool water actually goes

A pool that drops more than the usual evaporation is losing water somewhere, and it is rarely obvious from the surface. The three usual culprits are the underground pool plumbing, the shell itself, and the skimmer box.

We pressure test the pool plumbing to work out whether the suction and return lines are holding, use dye testing to trace leaks in the shell and around fittings, and check the skimmer and its connections — a very common failure point that gets missed.

None of it requires emptying the pool, which matters: draining a pool is expensive, it wastes a lot of water, and an empty fibreglass or concrete shell can move or crack.

Once we know where the leak is, we can talk through the repair. Same-day appointments are usually available across the Sunshine Coast.

What's involved

How we approach pool leak detection

Pool plumbing

We pressure test the suction and return lines to find out whether the underground pipework is holding — and where it isn't.

The shell

Dye testing traces cracks and failures in the shell, around lights, steps and fittings.

The skimmer box

A very common leak point, and one that is easy to miss. We check the box and every connection into it.

No draining required

We work with the pool full. Draining is costly, wasteful, and can damage the shell.

Leak found or it's FREE*

Zero financial risk. If we can't locate your leak, your invoice is zero. We back our work with this guarantee because we're that confident in our process and our equipment.

*Guarantee terms: Our "Leak Found or It's FREE" guarantee applies to residential properties only, where the leak is greater than 10 litres per hour. If we complete our full investigation and cannot locate a qualifying leak, you pay nothing.

Common questions

Pool Leak Detection questions

How do I know if my pool is leaking or just evaporating?
Evaporation on the Sunshine Coast usually accounts for a few millimetres a day, more in hot windy weather. A simple bucket test helps: float a bucket of pool water on a step, mark the level inside and outside, and compare after 24 hours. If the pool drops more than the bucket, you likely have a leak.
Do you have to empty the pool to find the leak?
No. We pressure test the plumbing and use dye testing with the pool full. Draining a pool wastes a lot of water, costs money to refill, and can crack or float the shell.
Can you repair the leak once you find it?
We repair the pool plumbing ourselves. Structural repairs to the shell are not something we take on — we will refer you to a pool specialist for those, and give them exactly what we found so they are not starting from scratch.
