Pool Leak Detection
A pool that drops more than the usual evaporation is losing water somewhere, and it is rarely obvious from the surface. The three usual culprits are the underground pool plumbing, the shell itself, and the skimmer box.
We pressure test the pool plumbing to work out whether the suction and return lines are holding, use dye testing to trace leaks in the shell and around fittings, and check the skimmer and its connections — a very common failure point that gets missed.
None of it requires emptying the pool, which matters: draining a pool is expensive, it wastes a lot of water, and an empty fibreglass or concrete shell can move or crack.
Once we know where the leak is, we can talk through the repair. Same-day appointments are usually available across the Sunshine Coast.
What's involved
We pressure test the suction and return lines to find out whether the underground pipework is holding — and where it isn't.
Dye testing traces cracks and failures in the shell, around lights, steps and fittings.
A very common leak point, and one that is easy to miss. We check the box and every connection into it.
We work with the pool full. Draining is costly, wasteful, and can damage the shell.
How we test
A pool leak investigation isn't guesswork — it's a set process that rules things in or out until we find the source.
We pressure test the pool's plumbing pipework — the suction and return lines running to and from the pump — often using an inflatable test plug to isolate individual sections of pipe. This tells us straight away whether the leak is in the pipework itself, rather than the shell or a fitting.
For everything else — the shell, the skimmer box, lights, returns and other penetrations — we use dye testing. A small amount of coloured dye is released right at the suspected point; if there's a crack or gap, you'll see it draw straight in.
We also check the hydrostatic valve and bottom drain plug. It's designed to release groundwater pressure from underneath an empty pool, but if it's faulty or left open, it can be a genuine source of water loss too.
Seals, unions, valves and connections around the plant are common places for a small leak to hide, and easy to write off as normal splash-back. We check these too as part of every inspection.
